I recorded this episode exactly one year after this podcast went live. Yes, it’s the one year anniversary of the Space To Shift Your Career podcast.
This puts me in a reflective mood. I think back to where I was one year ago.
I was at a crossroads:
Moving from one side of the world to the other.
I was about to go through another transition period in my life. And I feel it took me about one year to fully arrive back home. Much longer than on previous occasions.
My family and I had just come home to New Zealand from an overseas posting to Moscow. From one reality – and its many contradictions – to another, very different reality!
I had been working on the podcast for several months and was excited to finally share it. I was disappointed when my mentor told me to hold off until after our move.
But she was right. I had to be fully present when I launched – not be distracted by packing and unpacking boxes – and in a way my life.
I had used the last couple of months in Moscow to produce 10 or so episodes. That gave me breathing space for the first few months back home.
To settle in. To reconnect with people. To set up a new routine for my family – and my business.
This one year anniversary makes me reflect on what can happen in a year?
Three Versions Of You – Which One Do You Choose?
If you are at a crossroads in your career and life, there are different versions of you, depending on what you choose to do today.
To simplify things, I’d like to share three versions of you. I wonder, which one feels closest to where you want to be a year from now?
Version 1 – Remaining
You’re working hard in a role that doesn’t feel like you anymore.
You watch the clock in meetings. You close your laptop at the end of the day feeling tired but not proud.
You spend on small comforts that provide relief in the moment but change nothing long-term.
And underneath it all, the question:
“What might I be capable of if I was doing work
I enjoyed, did well, and believed in?
And in an environment that was sustainable?“
Version 2 – Keeping busy
You invest in a course that postpones the real decision.
You’re learning. You’re up-skilling. You’re keeping busy.
But if someone asked, “So what will you do with it?”, you’re not quite sure.
Version 3 – Committing Mindshare in the Future You Want
You make space – take 5 months – to get clear on what you really want, and what fits who you are now and how you want to evolve in future.
You give yourself structure, support and space to explore your options properly – rather than trying to figure it all out alone.
You’re taking deliberate steps from A to B. Not rushing, not drifting, but moving with purpose and intention.
Any investment of time, money, or energy goes in the RIGHT direction rather than ANY direction.
So…
Which Version Is Most Appealing to You?
If Version 3 feels like the direction you want for yourself, I can help you reconnect with yourself, map out your options and start experimenting.
Together we’ll:
- Look at the toll it’s taking to remain and what’s keeping you from taking a smart leap.
- Identify who you are now and how you want to evolve your contribution to the world.
- Name your transferable strengths, skills, talents and relevant experience.
- Assess the best resources, influential people and connections for your path.
You’ll:
- Uncover your deepest fears and think out loud about any and all dream scenarios.
- Take agency and decide to intentionally design your next career phase.
- Know your deal breakers and must haves for a more satisfying work experience.
- Navigate uncertainty by testing options and trying out interim solutions.
- Trust yourself and the process guided by a smart strategy and transition steps.
