Have you ever been on a boat that slowly loses momentum?
It starts off strong. Full speed ahead. Purpose clear. Destination in sight. But over time, it begins to slow. Not because something is wrong. But something shifted.
The scenery outside is still beautiful. The passengers are still kind. But your gaze starts to drift towards the horizon. You’re not feeling lost completely, but no longer sure where you’re headed.
You begin to wonder: ‘Is this still where I want to go?’
Maybe you’ve left the familiar shore behind. Or maybe you’re still anchored, because you know the current isn’t quite right for you anymore.
You’ve steered a steady course for years. You’ve served, led, and solved big problems with heart and integrity. And now? The water feels still. Other times choppy. And somehow not yours to sail anymore.
That can be an uncomfortable place, this in-between. You might wonder: ‘Am I just tired? Or is it time for something new?’
If you’re in the public sector and starting to feel that something has shifted for you, you’re not alone.
In fact, you might be in a powerful moment. One where you decide to be more intentional about how you want your next chapter to unfold.
In this episode, I’ll share 3 mindset shifts that can help you move forward with more clarity, integrity and hope for what’s next.
Not by having it all figured out, but by learning to navigate uncertainty in a way that’s more aligned with your pace, your priorities, and your possibilities.
Has Something Shifted For You?
You’ve done meaningful work. You’ve made a difference. And yet… something feels off.
Maybe you’re not sure whether it’s burnout, boredom, or a quiet inner nudge that you’ve outgrown the role you once loved.
Maybe you’re still doing work that matters. But you’re starting to wonder if it still matters to YOU.
You’re not lost. You’re simply in a time of transition.
This episode is for you if:
- You’re mission-driven but professionally restless.
- You’re craving a more integrated life: purpose, peace, and possibility.
- You don’t want someone to tell you what to do. You need SPACE to listen to yourself again.
Let’s talk about …
3 Mindset Shifts To Help Public Sector Leaders Move Forward
Gently, honestly and without the pressure to have it all figured out from the get go.
Mindset shift #1: From Waiting To Testing
The myth: “I can’t move forward until I have it all figured out.”
The truth: Clarity doesn’t come before the leap. It comes from movement.
In my coaching conversations, I often hear a variation of: “I’m just waiting for the right idea” or “I don’t want to waste time making the wrong move.”
But here’s what I’ve learned: the longer you wait for the perfect answer, the more you get stuck in analysis paralysis and the further you drift away from your inner compass.
Try this instead:
- Think of this as a “season of curiosity,” not a permanent decision.
- Give yourself permission to explore, test, and tinker.
- The question isn’t “what do I want to do forever?” It’s “What feels worth exploring next?”
Because here’s the thing: you’re not signing a 10-year contract with your next idea. You’re just opening a door to allow yourself to dream, to explore and to discover. To let yourself have a play with different ideas so you can experience them.
So I invite you to ask yourself:
What feels worth exploring next? Not forever, just for now?
That kind of experimentation will help you figure out HOW you want to spend your time on this planet, both at work and in your personal life, and what sort of balance YOU want. Not what others think or what you think others think you should do.
And remember: Knowing where you are going is important, so have an idea about the destination.
But it’s also a journey, right?
So make sure you enjoy the journey as well. And who knows, a path may reveal itself that you hadn’t even imagined existed before you started exploring.
Mindset shift #2: From Selling Yourself To Being Yourself
The myth: “I don’t know how to ‘sell’ myself for what’s next.”
The truth: You don’t need to become someone else. You need to be seen more fully, including what you want next. Especially in the public sector, many of us were trained to downplay our individuality. To focus on the team, the mission, the country.
So when we start thinking about other paths, it can feel awkward to think about ourselves.
You might wonder:
“How do I translate what I’ve done?”
“Will people get me?”
“Do I sound convincing enough?”
Let that go.
Try this instead:
- Reframe your story: “This is who I am now, and this is how I want to evolve.”
- Focus on what has always driven you: your values, your curiosity, your care. Having a real positive impact, feeling connected, and doing something that’s meaningful.
- Don’t worry about trying to sound impressive. Speak in a way that feels true. People connect with what’s real, not what’s polished.
As one of my clients said:
“I realized I don’t need to go by someone else’s script of what a ‘successful’ career ‘should’ look like. I just needed a safe space to speak out loud what’s been on my mind. A mirror to see what was inside of me all along. And a bit of courage to take the leap and discover what I’m capable of.”
Mindset shift #3: From Hiding To Opening Up
The myth: “I should be grateful. Other people have it worse.”
The truth: You’re not selfish for wanting more. You’re not crazy for seeking change. You’re evolving. And that’s something to honour, not hide.
I hear this often from high-achievers in the public sector:
“I feel guilty for even thinking about leaving.”
“I’m scared of what people will think.”
“Am I letting my team down?”
It’s okay to feel all of that. But don’t let it keep you small.
Try this instead:
- Share your questions with someone you trust.
- Join spaces where transitions are normalised.
- Give yourself the support you’d offer a friend in the same place.
You don’t have to make a decision today. You just have to stop hiding from the fact that something is calling you forward.
You don’t need to burn everything down to move forward. You don’t have to have a plan, a pitch or a perfect next step.
You need space to reconnect with yourself: Your own pace. Your own priorities. Your own possibilities.
This is your time to remind yourself of what matters most to YOU.
Not who you were 10 years ago, or what your title says today, or what others may expect of you.
But who you are now. And who you want to become in future.
Until next time: make space, rediscover YOU, and then take action.
